Adventures With Anxiety!
After playing Adventures with Anxiety! 2019 (Nicky Case) I would consider this to be a benchmark for the game we want to create although, in that game you play as the anxiety wolf whereas in ours you take up the role of the main character. In Adventure with anxiety it explores the relationship the main character who has anxiety present it as wolf an animal known to violently consume and devour its prey, I point this out because of the common proverb of the two wolves although more commonly associated with anger it is also associated with fear much like anxiety itself the other wolf or our narrative focus in this case is the other wolf associated with positive emotions but they can get swallowed by the other wolf.
Our game has similar theming we want to give the players a chance to explore the negative side of anxiety but always offer a way out of it whether that comes through character interactions or any other choices the character has to make, if you stop feeding the wolf it will stop growing so to speak. We want to create a game that can help people try to overcome some aspects of their anxiety or at least inspire something.
Monster PromThe Monster Prom series by Beautiful Glitch will act as our visual jumping off point. This series is a dating sim which our game is not so we won't be taking much from the game other than the saturated colours as well as the unique silhouettes and how they influence the character design process. Our 2D art lead has created a style guide that they have used to turn our character designs into sprites for our game. Despite the topic we have chosen to cover we wanted the world to remain quite bright, not only for visual intrigue and to have something shiny to draw people in but to show that world around you is still light even if you don't you don't feel like you're at your best.
Life is strange is our last Benchmark game. Our game will have a few similarities to Life is Strange (2015 developed by Don't Nod) the choice system we want to develop will take a little inspiration from this game in terms of visual cues. We have no intention of giving our character any powers seen within this game as we want to keep the game fairly grounded in reality to keep it relatable to our audience. As this particular benchmark (to me anyway) pertains to a UI aspect I will be handling these visual cues and passing them on to Kenny our coder to implement into the game as they have more experience in ren py or any other coding programs.
