Research into Anxiety
There are many types of anxiety disorders we could attribute to our character. After discussing with my team we have come to the conclusion that our character has Generalised anxiety disorder and Social anxiety.
Generalised anxiety disorder or GAD is a disorder that causes feelings constant feelings of stress that can inhibit the daily tasks of life and these feelings are generally difficult to control. Other common symptoms include "Difficulty sleeping, feeling tense, stomach problems, low mood" - NHS List 2024. GAD is relatively common with about 1 in 25 people being affected by it in the UK as of 2022, there isn't a singular thing that causes GAD because; your environment, your own thought processes, your genetic traits may all predispose you to anxiety disorders of almost all kinds.
It seems that stressful situations in everyday life that are more likely to happen again can lead to developing any form of anxiety but more commonly GAD.
Social anxiety is a rather common anxiety disorder that people deal with generally stemming from the feeling or the fear of being judged or in some cases, misunderstood based on my own knowledge from my friends and family. Once again everyday things like "having to talk to a cashier, meeting new people or answering a question in class..."- (NIMH 2022), can be stressful to those suffering from Social anxiety disorder potentially leading them to completely disengage from social interactions or refraining from going to places in the public.
Our main character definitely struggles with both GAD and Social Anxiety, the idea was to put our character in situations that would allow us to demonstrate their anxiety and our understanding of it, we have a situation in a classroom scene that plays out in one of two ways but each time there is an internal monologue displaying the characters mindset, we wanted to present the situation as kind of distressing for our character yet they are able to overcome it
